Abstract

|
Research on depression in adulthood has been subjected to more than twenty years of systematic research, while investigations regarding childhood and adolescent depression are only now being initiated. Although no unifying, explanatory theory of
the
etiology of depression emerges from the results of studies reviewed below, the findings do support that depression does exist in children and adolescents. This revies focuases on the phenomenology, epidemiology, etiology, and treatment of child
and
adolescent depression and emphasizesx the developmental characteristics in understanding and defining childhood and adolescent depression. Summary and suggestions for future research are also provided in this review.
